Fake family calls and benefit-payment scams

Slow down urgent payment requests, verify a caller independently and avoid identity or OTP requests linked to prizes and benefits.

Prepared 8 October 2026 · General guidance; check current provider requirements

A familiar-sounding voice is not enough to verify an urgent request. A scammer may imitate a relative, official or support agent and pressure you to send money or share a code.

Verify through another route

Hang up and call the person using a saved number. Ask a trusted family member to check the story. For a benefit or government-service message, navigate to the organisation's official website yourself.

Watch the requested action

An unexpected demand for an OTP, fingerprint scan, remote-access app or transfer to a personal account needs caution. Do not let a deadline or threatened account closure replace verification.

If you already responded

Contact the provider linked to the exposed account or payment. Change compromised credentials and preserve messages. If a mobile connection changed unexpectedly, contact the operator immediately.

Discuss a family plan

Agree how you will verify urgent money requests. Keep the plan private and choose a method that does not depend only on recognising a voice. Review OTP scam guidance.
