A deceased family member’s SIM: what to do

Prepare for an operator conversation about closure or transfer without assuming access to a deceased subscriber’s private accounts.

Prepared 8 October 2026 · General guidance; check current provider requirements

Contact the operator to explain that the registered subscriber has died. Ask about closure, account protection or any eligible transfer process. The documents and authorised applicant can depend on the situation.

Prepare for the conversation

Ask which death, identity, relationship or estate-authority documents are required before visiting. Keep original documents safe and submit copies only through a verified process.

Protect linked accounts

A SIM may still receive account-recovery messages. Do not treat possession of the phone as permission to access private email, financial or messaging accounts. Use each provider's process for deceased customers or estate representatives.

Ask for confirmation

Record whether the operator has blocked, closed or transferred the line. Keep the reference number and ask what remains to be completed.

If there is suspected misuse

Explain the evidence to the operator and the appropriate reporting authority. Preserve dates and messages without circulating personal records publicly.
