SIM GUIDES

Choosing a mobile connection for a child

Ask about eligibility and responsible account ownership before arranging a mobile connection for someone under 18.

Prepared 8 October 2026 · General guidance; check current provider requirements

Ask your operator which arrangements are available for a child and who must be the registered subscriber. A phone intended for a minor should not be registered using a borrowed identity or an unexplained retailer workaround.

Questions for the operator

Confirm minimum eligibility, accepted documents, guardian involvement and who can request blocking, replacement or closure. Get advice for the actual product rather than relying on a general age claim from a blog.

Set practical safeguards

Discuss unexpected links, OTP requests, unknown callers and permission before sharing photos or location. Configure spending and device controls appropriate to the child's age. Explain how to contact a trusted adult if something feels wrong.

Plan for a lost device

Keep purchase records and recovery details securely. Know how to block the connection and use account-based device recovery. Review lost-phone steps.

Review the arrangement later

When circumstances change, ask about a formal ownership transfer. Do not assume handing over the SIM changes the registered account.
