SMS security and SS7: what ordinary users can do

Understand the limits of SMS-based verification and choose stronger account protection where your services support it.

Prepared 8 October 2026 · General guidance; check current provider requirements

SS7 refers to telecom signalling technology. Security discussions about signalling networks do not mean every missing SMS is evidence of an interception attack. Most users cannot diagnose a network-level attack from a phone alone.

Focus on actions you control

Use passkeys or an authenticator for important accounts where supported. Protect the device and email account, keep software updated and review recovery methods. Save recovery codes securely.

Keep SMS risks in perspective

Phishing, an unauthorised SIM replacement and a compromised device can also expose account access. A code can be misused simply because someone persuaded you to share it; no advanced network attack is required.

If you suspect compromise

Record the symptoms, secure the account with the service provider and ask the operator to investigate connection changes. Avoid buying “SS7 protection” software based on a scare message.

Learn the common warning signs

Read OTP scams and SIM-swap response. This guide offers defensive account hygiene, not instructions to access telecom networks.
