Your mobile number can be part of messaging-account registration and recovery. Losing control of the line can therefore create an account risk. Secure the mobile connection and the messaging account as separate tasks.
Review your protection
Use the security settings available in the official WhatsApp app, including two-step verification and linked-device review. Keep any recovery email current. Never give another person a registration code or security PIN.
If someone accessed the account
Follow the recovery guidance in the WhatsApp Help Center. Read any waiting period or verification instruction shown by the service. Do not use paid third-party recovery software.
Warn contacts through another route
If an intruder may be messaging people in your name, tell close contacts not to send money or codes. Preserve evidence of impersonation before deleting messages where practical.
If you will stop using the number
Update the account while you still control the old line. Review other services tied to it and read recycled-number guidance.
