Mobile number portability: moving networks safely
Prepare for a network switch, protect the MNP reply and respond to a transfer request you did not authorise.
On this page
Mobile number portability lets a subscriber request a move to another operator while keeping the number, subject to the receiving operator's current requirements. It is different from changing the registered owner.
Before you request a move
Ask the receiving operator about eligibility, identity checks, charges, service interruption and any outstanding obligations. Keep access to the current line and do not start conflicting transfer requests.
Keep the MNP response private
If the official process asks you to send MNP to 667, send it from the intended line. The reply can contain personal details. Forward it only as directed by the verified receiving operator after you choose to proceed.
After the switch
Test calls, SMS, mobile data and account recovery. The number's prefix may no longer identify its network; see network checking.
Unexpected porting request
Contact your existing operator immediately if you receive a transfer notice you did not initiate. Preserve the message and request an investigation. Secure related accounts if your service stops unexpectedly.
