SIM SAFETY

Why a pre-activated second-hand SIM is risky

Check the authorised registration route before using a SIM obtained from a private seller or another person.

Prepared 8 October 2026 · General guidance; check current provider requirements

A working SIM does not prove it is registered to you. If you buy a pre-activated line from a private seller, you may be unable to replace, recover or close it through the proper process.

Before accepting a connection

Ask the operator whether ownership can be transferred and what both parties must do. Do not rely on a seller's screenshot or photocopied identity document. Read ownership transfer guidance.

Protect personal accounts

Avoid attaching important recovery accounts to a number whose subscriber record you cannot resolve. The previous holder may still have services associated with it, and you should not access those accounts.

If you already use the SIM

Contact the operator, explain the situation and request the authorised route. Keep any sale record without publishing the seller's private information. Do not impersonate the registered holder.

Safer purchase

Use an authorised outlet, read the registration details and keep the receipt. Check your own records after the transaction.
