SIM ownership transfer: what to ask your operator

Check SIM owner and prepare an ownership-transfer request and distinguish a transfer from a replacement or number-porting request.

Prepared 22 October 2026 · General guidance; check current provider requirements

Changing the person registered against a connection is an ownership transfer. It differs from moving a number to another network or replacing a damaged SIM. Start with the current operator’s authorised support team.

Before a visit

Ask whether the registered holder and proposed new holder must attend, which original identity documents are required, and whether the connection is eligible. Confirm any current fee, waiting period, outstanding bill or biometric requirement for your case.

Complete the right transaction

Explain that you need a transfer, not a new connection with a similar number. Read the authorization before agreeing. Keep confirmation of the new subscriber record and check that service works as expected.

Special circumstances

Overseas holders, business lines and deceased subscribers can involve different evidence. Do not assume a family relationship or a power of attorney automatically removes an identity check. Read overseas SIM management or deceased subscriber guidance.

Before handing over the line

Remove the number from your account recovery settings and update services that still use it. Do not give the recipient access to your messages, email or passwords.
